A Place to Learn, Create, and Grow After School

Tutoring, classes, and hands-on workshops bring a small group of students together to explore new skills and learn alongside one another at Raíces del Canal.

Learning together is at the heart of the after-school program.

When the school day ends, there is still so much to discover. At Raíces del Canal, a small group of students comes together for after-school tutoring, classes, and workshops that make room for academic support, creativity, and hands-on learning.

This ongoing work is one of Raíces del Canal’s core offerings. It gives students a place to ask questions, try something unfamiliar, and share the experience of learning with others.

Support for learning, space for curiosity

Tutoring is part of that experience, alongside classes and activities that invite students to explore. Reading, writing, and working through a challenge can sit alongside a creative project or a new discovery about the natural world.

The small-group setting brings students and instructors around the same tables. It creates opportunities to work side by side, talk through ideas, and give each activity time and attention.

Learning by making

In sewing workshops, students work with fabric and learn to use a sewing machine with guidance. The photographs capture different stages of making: concentrating on a stitch, arranging pieces, and holding up a finished project.

New skills take shape, one stitch at a time.

Pillow-making gives that process a familiar, useful result. A finished pillow is something a student can hold, share, and recognize as their own work. The learning happens along the way, through trying, adjusting, and continuing.

Growing plants and exploring ideas

Plant activities bring environmental learning into the classroom. Students handle soil, work with seedlings, and explore the living things they are learning to care for. These experiences connect the after-school program with Raíces del Canal’s wider relationship to the land.

Puzzles and other table activities offer another way to explore. Looking for a piece, testing how it fits, and trying again can turn an ordinary classroom moment into an opportunity for concentration and problem-solving.

A place to keep growing

Across tutoring, classes, and workshops, the activities vary. What connects them is the opportunity for students to learn in community: to receive support, practice a skill, and discover something they want to understand or make.

These everyday moments are an important part of Raíces del Canal’s work. Around a classroom table, a small group of students has room to create, connect, and keep growing.
