On October 10, Raíces del Canal families and community members came together for a Minga focused on a practical act of care: picking up trash in the Canal neighborhood.

According to Angie Daniel, Raíces del Canal and MCSTOPPP collected 330 gallons of trash from Bahia Way and Canal Street during the gathering. The total reflects a shared effort to care for streets and spaces that are part of everyday life in the neighborhood.

The cleanup brought Raíces del Canal together with the Marin Countywide Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (MCSTOPPP), whose work focuses on protecting water quality in Marin.

Many hands, one neighborhood

The group photograph captures people of different ages standing together in reflective vests, with bags of collected trash lined up in front of them. Buckets and litter grabbers sit alongside the group: everyday tools for work that becomes possible when people take part together.

At Raíces del Canal, a Minga is a way for students, parents, and neighbors to contribute side by side. This October gathering brought that spirit beyond the garden beds and into the surrounding streets.

Learning through shared care

For young people, taking part offers a direct way to connect with the place they call home. Caring for a neighborhood can begin with noticing what needs attention, lending a hand, and seeing what a group can accomplish.

The photographs also make room for the people behind the total: children and adults sharing the work, smiling together, and standing beside the results of their effort. The 330-gallon figure is one measure of the day; the time spent caring for the Canal together is another part of the story.

Thank you for showing up

Thank you to everyone who took part in the October 10 cleanup, to MCSTOPPP for joining the effort, and to Angie Daniel for sharing the collection total. Each helping hand contributed to a cleaner shared space.

Raíces del Canal’s Mingas take place every second Saturday of the month. New to the community? You and your family are welcome to ask about an upcoming gathering. Check with the team for the time, meeting point, and what to bring.
